The origins of roulette date all the way back to 1665 when mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal was working on a perpetual motion machine. The idea behind the machine was that it would run with without needing to draw from external energy, which, of course, isn’t technically possible in physics. While he failed to achieve his aim, however, he succeeded in inventing the game of roulette, although the first game on record wasn't played until 1796 in Paris.
Fast forward more than two centuries later to 1996 and along came the very first online casino. Back then, online players were restricted to a limited number of blackjack tables and slot machines. It was only a matter of time before roulette was added to the mix, of course, and so just a few years later, these players were able to experience the excitement of betting on red or black from the comfort of their homes. Playing roulette would never be the same again.
Players were no longer forced to play the variant of choice offered by a land-based casino. The best online casinos offered American, European, and French roulette, so players could feel what it was like to play roulette in another part of the world.
The ability to play roulette online brought with it a number of other advantages. For one, players could bet whenever it was convenient. What’s more, thanks to advancements made in technology, and with no physical limitations in place, many new versions of roulette were made available. Today, you can play online roulette on your PC, Mac, iPad, iPhone, or any other smart device.
In European roulette, you can place a bet on any number from 1-36. The online roulette table features just one zero, which means that the odds of you winning are greater than in American Roulette.
The oldest version of the game, French roulette is often regarded as the ultimate in classic casino play. Just like in European Roulette, there is only one zero. There are fewer betting options than in European Roulette, however.
The main difference between American Roulette and other versions of the game is that here there's an additional compartment (double zero) on the online roulette wheel.
While there were numerous advantages offered by online roulette, there was one significant factor lacking- the atmosphere that comes from enjoying live action in a land based casino. While playing online roulette is more convenient than going out to play at a physical venue, some players missed the level of excitement that comes from a real world casino.
The first company to offer live dealer action streamed games from a real world casino via webcam. Players could join in from behind their computer, with the main difference being that a croupier spinning a roulette wheel from an actual casino would determine the winning number. This offered a very different experience than that of an electronic random number generator used in traditional online casino games.
There were still issues that remained, however. Fortunately, improvements were made in 2006 with the introduction of the first dedicated live casino studios. If you'd like to play roulette in its live form, have a look at our Live Roulette game.
Each of the main variants works on the same principles. The online roulette wheel itself is made up of numbered compartments, which are numbered 0-36 and coloured either red or black. The exception is 0, which is coloured green. Depending on the variant, there will be either one or two squares featuring a zero. The player's job is to predict the winning compartment, i.e. either its number or colour.
There are various bets you can place, in addition to even money bets, i.e. betting on the colour or an odd/even number. Other opportunities include betting on a range of numbers and groups of numbers.
One all bets have been placed, the croupier spins the ball, which eventually lands into one of the compartments. If the number or colour of the compartment corresponds with what you had placed your bet on, you win!
There are two primary ways to bet: inside betting and outside betting. These are named based on the bet positions according to the table’s layout. The odds of winning an inside bet are low, but it offers a high payout. Outside bets, however, are the opposite, as while the payouts are smaller, the odds of winning are higher.
An inside bet is a bet on either single or multiple numbers. While there are various ways of clustering numbers, the groups are determined by where they are located on the online roulette table in relation to one another. For example, a Street is where you bet on three numbers, but they must be consecutive in order to qualify, such as 7, 8, and 9. To offer another example, a corner bet requires betting on four numbers that form a square, such as 1, 2, 4, and 5.
It stands to reason that those with a safe betting style have a preference for outside betting, as they're attracted by the increased chance of winning. The most common outside bet is an even money bet, as they approximately cover half of all possible outcomes; the exception being the zero (as well as the double zero in American roulette). To be exact, the odds of winning on an even money bet is 47.37% in traditional American Roulette and 48.65% in European Roulette. Even money bets available are red or black, even or odd, and 1-18 or 19-36. Each offers a 1:1 payout.
The two remaining outside bets are Dozen and Column. Each covers a total of 12 numbers, which is almost a third of all possible outcomes. The odds for this kind of bet is 31.58% in traditional American roulette and 32.43% in European Roulette.
One thing you should consider when looking for the best online roulette strategy is the house edge. While you can’t change the house edge, there are ways of reducing it to give you a greater advantage. In American roulette, for example, the house edge is 5.26%. For making the same bet in European roulette, the house edge is lower at 2,7%. So just by choosing to bet on European roulette, you are reducing the house edge by close to half.
